What is coworking space?
To explain what coworking space is, it might be best to look, first, at traditional office space for lease. In the past, if you wanted to rent an office, you would call up a broker and tell them you want to look at an office space for rent, and that broker would take you around to look at some which meet your budget and your specific needs. They might take you to a standalone office building, or possible one in a strip mall. If it turns out you find one you like, you would then sign a year’s lease on it, paying first month plus damage deposit, and then the real fun begins. You will need to transfer the utilities to your name, you will need to purchase signage, you will need to furnish it, and you will need to take care of the seemingly endless list of other details before actually moving in.
Coworking space is none of that. With coworking space, you are signing a month-to-month rental agreement for an office space you share with other business people. The secondary details, like utilities, are included in the rent, and since this is a temporary office for you, you don’t need to purchase furnishings or signage or any of those other nagging details.
And, when you are done for the month you simply grab your laptop, gather up whatever other incidentals you brought with you, and you go home.
Cut costs with shared office space.
The cost-savings should be obvious. Monthly rentals of $1000 or less, compared to traditional office rents of $2000 or more. No utilities payment. No WiFi payment. No insurance payment, or payment for furniture.
Not for everyone.
What we just described is a dream scenario for a small business owner with a limited operating budget and, in truth, it has been the answer to prayers for many small business owners since COVID. In uncertain economic times, this kind of non-commitment (long term) is the perfect business model.
However, it is not for everyone. Working in a shared environment is hard for some people. There can be, at times, a sort of frenetic energy in a shared office environment, and that energy may not be conducive for someone who likes a quiet and calm environment.
Our suggestion: give it a try for a month and find out if it works for you. It is a fairly inexpensive trial period, and it just might save you from signing a lease agreement you really shouldn’t sign.
