What is a coworking space?
Between 2006 and 2015, a number of national studies have shown the number of coworking spaces and available seats have roughly doubled each year in the United States.
Brad Neuberg is credited with starting the coworking movement in San Francisco in 2005 with the idea of combining the independence of freelancing with the structure and community of an office environment. To do this, he invented the word “coworking” with no hyphen. Coworking space as we know it today was preceded by European hacker spaces of the 1990s, where programmers would exchange skills and best practices in a cooperative, single environment. In other words, one central room with multiple work spaces, all manned by independent workers from varying companies.
Some coworking places were developed by nomadic Internet entrepreneurs seeking an alternative to working in coffee shops and cafes, or to isolation in independent or home offices. A 2007 survey showed that many employees worry about feeling isolated and losing human interaction if they were to telecommute. Roughly a third of private-sector and public-sector workers also reported that they did not want to stay at home during work because of the isolation concerns. Another major factor that drives demand for coworking is the growing role of independent workers in the modern work environment.
What does this type of office space for lease cost?
Coworking spaces typically rent by the day, the week, or the month, depending upon which one you contact. A monthly coworking space can be had for about $400 per month. Doing some quick division will tell you that a weeky office space for lease will then run you about $100 per week or about $15 per day in those places where daily rentals are offered.
Is this type of coworking arrangement for you?
If you are an independent business person, a traveling business person, or a home-based business owner, it is definitely worth considering. This is a way to combat loneliness and those feelings of isolation. This is a way to share ideas with others who are not competitors. It is a proven way of brainstorming with other creative individuals, and it is a way to handle a short-term problem (space) with a very inexpensive solution.
And if you are not interested in coworking spaces, and would prefer a traditional office for rent. the District offers Box Office Warehouse Suites.
